Learn About Prime-Line & Prop 65

You may have noticed that some of Prime-Line's items developed for the North American market are labeled with a warning from the State of California. These labels were placed on our products in order to comply with California’s Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, better known as Prop 65. Although we are confident our products are not harmful, they are now in compliance with this California law.

Prime-Line Products, in compliance with California’s Proposition 65, has begun marking certain packaged products with the following statement:

“Prop 65 Warning: This product contains one or more chemicals known to the state of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. “

These products are known to contain certain listed chemicals. Prime-line feels that in all cases the products are safe for use and pose no substantial risk to the consumer.

What is Proposition 65?
In November 1986, California voters overwhelmingly approved an initiative to address growing concerns about exposure to toxic chemicals. That initiative became The Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, better known by its original name.

What Does Proposition 65 Require?
Proposition 65 requires the Governor to publish a list of chemicals that are known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm. Agents that cause cancer are called carcinogens; those that cause birth defects or other reproductive harm are called reproductive toxicants. This list must be updated at least once a year. Over 700 chemicals have been listed as of March 10, 2000.

Prop 65 requires a warning for chemicals at levels that are far below the level that would cause harm.

What kinds of chemicals are on the list?
The list contains a wide range of chemicals, including dyes, solvents, pesticides, drugs, food additives, and byproducts of certain processes. These chemicals may be naturally occurring, or synthetic. Some of them are ingredients of common household products, others are specialty chemicals used in very specific industrial applications.
